Edwards & Roberts Inlaid Mahogany Pedestal Desk with Original Handles, Circa 1890

19th century
Description

A fine quality late 19th century inlaid mahogany pedestal desk by Edwards & Roberts of London, circa 1890.

The rectangular moulded top with a raised gallery to the rear is finely inlaid with boxwood stringing and decorative corner motifs, above an arrangement of three frieze drawers and three graduated drawers to each pedestal.

The drawer fronts are similarly decorated with contrasting inlaid borders and retain their original ornate brass handles.

The desk stands on twin plinth bases and has a generous central kneehole (60cmx51cm). One drawer is stamped ‘Edwards & Roberts’, the celebrated London cabinet makers and retailers renowned for the quality of their furniture during the second half of the 19th century.

A particularly attractive example, with a lovely warm colour and good figuring to the mahogany.

English, circa 1890.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pedestal desk is a large free-standing writing desk featuring a flat rectangular top supported by two vertical pedestals containing drawers, leaving an open space in the centre for legroom. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these desks provided substantial storage and surface space for working environments.

Late Victorian cabinet makers predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak. Decorative surfaces often featured satinwood or boxwood stringing and marquetry, while structural hardware was crafted from cast brass.

Furniture produced by Edwards & Roberts frequently carries a stamped makers mark on the top edge of a drawer or a metal trade plate. Authentication is further confirmed through precise dovetail joinery, high-grade mahogany timber, detailed satinwood inlay, and quality brass fitments.

Position the desk as a focal centerpiece in a dedicated study or home office, pairing it with a complementary leather or contemporary upholstered chair. Balance the rich timber tones with modern task lighting and structured brass accessories.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice per year along the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent timber movement or veneer lifting.
