Japanese Antique (late 19thC) pair gilded bronze statues, depicting Samantabhadra and Manjushri Bodhisattva of Mahayana Buddhism that emphasizes the Bodhisattva ideal, where practitioners vow to attain enlightenment to save all sentient beings, rather than seeking only individual liberation. During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese metalworkers adapted traditional casting techniques, previously used for Buddhist paraphernalia and samurai sword fittings, towards fine art export and domestic decorative pieces. Depictions of Bodhisattvas such as Samantabhadra (Fugen) and Manjushri (Monju) draw upon long-standing Buddhist iconography, representing wisdom and practice respectively.

These figures were typically crafted using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue) from bronze alloys composed of copper, tin, and lead. Gilding was applied using either fire-gilding (amalgamation of gold and mercury heated off) or cold gilding with gold leaf, creating a contrast against dark, patinated bronze bases.

Authentic pieces display detailed hand-chasing, crisp tooling along fabric folds, and natural surface wear where the gilded layer meets the patinated metal. Castings from this era generally show evidence of hand-finishing inside cavities and heavy visual weight proportional to their scale.
