An unusual opportunity to acquire a signed, dated and personally inscribed early etching by J. R. G. Exley, produced during his formative Royal College of Art period under Sir Frank Short and based upon one of Rembrandt's great etched self-portrait compositions.

CONDITION

FAQs

An etching copy is an intaglio print produced by a printmaker studying or reproducing the composition of a historical artist. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, student artists at academies frequently created etchings after Old Masters to demonstrate technical proficiency in tonal shading and line work.

Etchings are produced by coating a metal plate with an acid-resistant wax ground, scratching a design into the ground with an etching needle, and submerging the plate in an acid bath. Ink is then applied to the etched grooves and transferred onto dampened paper using a high-pressure rolling press.

Authentic period etchings display a distinct plate mark indentation around the boundary of the image created by the pressure of the printing press. Under magnification, genuine etchings reveal continuous ink lines and variable line depth rather than the dot matrix pattern characteristic of modern mechanical reproductions.

A monochrome print integrates effectively into a contemporary gallery wall or an academic workspace. Pairing historic works on paper with dark timber furniture, brass accents, or simple modern frames creates a refined visual contrast between traditional printmaking and contemporary decor.

Works on paper should be framed using acid-free mountboard and UV-protective glass to prevent yellowing, foxing, and fading. Display the print away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with fluctuating humidity to protect the paper fibers and ink integrity.
