Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chenets, also known as fire dogs or andirons, are decorative metal supports placed at the front of a hearth opening. Developed in France and refined throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, they served both to prevent burning logs from rolling into the room and as high-status ornamental embellishments.

Traditional French chenets were cast in heavy metals such as bronze, iron, and brass. Fine examples frequently feature mercury gilding (ormolu) contrasted against dark patinated bronze, assembled using threaded iron rods and square nuts characteristic of historic metalworking.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp hand-chased surface detailing, substantial weight, and evidence of hand-finishing on the reverse sides. Historic ormolu finishes display a soft gold depth with gentle wear near high-touch areas, rather than a uniform modern electroplated appearance.

While originally intended for active hearths, these sculptural bronze accents can be displayed inside decorative fireplace alcoves, styled atop a mantlepiece, or positioned on a console table to introduce historical texture and metallic contrast.

Maintain gilt and patinated surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid liquid metal polishes, chemical solvents, or abrasive tools, as these permanently damage historic patination and delicate gilding.
