Original Antique Victorian Small 2 Door Flame Mahogany Sideboard Cupboard C1870

19th century
Description

Antique Victorian Small Flame Mahogany Sideboard Cupboard

An Exceptional Mahogany Sideboard Dating To C1870.

An exceptionally fine quality Victorian Flame Mahogany sideboard, dating to circa 1870. Standing at just 107 cm wide and 43 cm deep, this is an unusually small and remarkably rare example of Victorian cabinetmaking, offering the grandeur of a full-sized sideboard in a compact, highly versatile footprint. The piece features a solid Mahogany top with its front edge elegantly lipped in crossbanded Flame Mahogany, sitting above a single, shaped front hidden drawer. The drawer front is veneered in rich Flame Mahogany and exhibits outstanding craftsmanship, opening smoothly to reveal solid Ash linings with exceptionally fine hand-cut dovetails.

Flanking the drawer are hand-carved acanthus leaf corbels that frame the twin cupboard doors below. The doors feature round-arched Flame Mahogany field panels displaying a striking, symmetrical grain configuration. Inside, the cupboard opens to a clean interior fitted with a single removable shelf, offering ample practical storage despite its rare, small proportions. The doors retain their original, fully operational brass lever lock, original internal latch, and key.

The cabinet rests on a solid crossbanded plinth base supported by four original turned bun feet. The entire piece has been sympathetically restored in our workshop, preserving its authentic patina and character while ensuring the timber displays a deep, warm lustre throughout.

Owing to its unusually petite dimensions, this piece possesses a degree of flexibility rarely found in Victorian furniture. It is perfectly suited for a narrow entrance hall or hallway where a standard sideboard would prove too intrusive, an intimate dining room alcove, a living room, or even a home office or bedroom as an elegant, decorative storage piece. Small, high-quality sideboards from this era are extraordinarily hard to come by, making this a rare find for smaller contemporary spaces.

Please note; This item is in fantastic home ready condition as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian flame mahogany sideboard is a 19th-century storage cabinet constructed using cuts of mahogany veneer that display a feather-like pattern known as flame. These pieces typically feature arch-panel doors, frieze drawers, carved corbels, and sturdy turned or plinth bases designed for dining rooms and hallways.

Victorian cabinetmakers utilised solid mahogany framework paired with flame mahogany veneers laid over secondary timbers such as pine or oak. Construction techniques included hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, solid brass lock mechanisms, and carved wooden accents secured with traditional hide glue.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass lever locks, and minor irregularities indicative of hand-planed woodwork. The presence of natural patina, age-appropriate wear to the timber, and original turned bun feet or plinth bases help verify the period.

An antique mahogany sideboard functions well as a focal point in a contemporary hallway, dining room, or living space. Positioning modern artwork above the cabinet or topping it with ceramic vessels creates a balanced visual contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, wiping along the grain of the wood. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber, avoiding synthetic aerosol sprays and direct heat sources that can cause veneer movement.
