Regency Simulated Rosewood & Gilt Decorated Cabinet, C.1820

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An attractive Regency simulated rosewood cabinet, circa 1820, of elegant proportions and with particularly appealing gilt decoration. The rectangular top with rounded front corners sits above a single frieze drawer fitted with brass knob handles. Below, a pair of panelled cupboard doors open to reveal a useful shelved interior. The rich simulated rosewood finish is highlighted by fine gilt-painted line decoration and stylised foliate motifs, with further gilt detailing to the distinctive turned pilasters flanking the doors. The cabinet is raised on four ring-turned feet.

The combination of its dark Regency finish, restrained gilding and compact proportions gives the cabinet considerable decorative appeal. At just under 80cm wide and only 33cm deep, it is also an unusually versatile piece, suitable for a drawing room, hallway, dining room or alcove where a deeper cabinet might be impractical.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 87cm

Width: 79.5cm

Depth: 33cm

CONDITION

In good, structurally sound antique condition with wear commensurate with age and use. There are minor scratches, knocks, rubbing and areas of loss to the simulated rosewood and gilt finish throughout, commensurate with approximately 200 years of age and use. Overall the painted finish is attractive and stable. There is a replacement lock with working key.

Overall, a particularly decorative and useful Regency cabinet retaining plenty of character and appealing period decoration.

As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If any dimensions are critical, please check these with us before purchasing.

ABOUT ALSO ANTIQUE FURNITURE

Thank you for viewing this piece from Also Antique Furniture. We carefully select antique furniture and decorative objects for their quality, craftsmanship, character and individuality. Our tastes are broad, and we’re happy to be led by the piece rather than a particular period or style. Above all, we choose things we genuinely admire and would be happy to have in our own home. Every item is individually inspected, researched and professionally photographed, with clear descriptions and honest condition reports to help you buy with confidence.

We believe good furniture should have a long life. Choosing antique keeps well-made furniture and existing materials in use, and we favour sympathetic restoration that preserves the patina and character acquired over generations.

DELIVERY & COLLECTION

Collection is welcome by arrangement. We can usually arrange delivery throughout mainland UK using trusted independent couriers, charged at cost. As a general guide, delivery for an average-sized chest of drawers is typically £80–£100. Larger items and more remote locations will incur higher charges.

Most deliveries are completed within approximately two weeks, although faster delivery may sometimes be available. Please contact us with your postcode for a delivery quotation before purchasing.

AUTHENTICITY & CONDITION

We strive to describe every item as accurately and honestly as possible. Statements regarding age, attribution, origin and provenance are offered in good faith and represent our professional opinion based on the information available at the time of listing.

As all of our items are antique or vintage, signs of age and use should be expected. Old repairs, knocks, wear, variations in colour and other minor imperfections are often part of a piece’s history and character. Where condition affects its integrity, appearance or usefulness, we will endeavour to make this clear in the description.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the early 19th century, Regency simulated rosewood cabinets feature painted wood graining designed to imitate exotic rosewood timber, often accented with gilded decoration and classical motifs.

These pieces typically feature timber frames painted with dark glazes to replicate wood grain, complemented by brass handles, lock escutcheons, and gilded detailing.

Authentic Regency cabinets feature hand-applied faux graining techniques, traditional joinery, period brass fittings, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to contrast its dark finish and gilded details, using the top surface to display understated decorative objects or artwork.

Dust the cabinet regularly with a soft dry cloth, avoid abrasive liquid cleaners, and keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve the painted finish.
