Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This oil painting on canvas dates from 1960 and follows a classical realism style within an English country house design vibe. The composition portrays a classical still life of fruit including a split pomegranate, green and dark grapes, apples, a yellow citrus fruit, and a ceramic jug arranged on a dark surface under dramatic chiaroscuro lighting. Rich, warm brown tones dominate the palette alongside vibrant reds, yellows, and greens. The canvas is housed within a gilded wooden frame featuring a stepped moulded profile with corner decorations. The work measures 64 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, it is suited for display above a sideboard in a dining room or living space.

FAQs

Classical fruit still life paintings originated prominently during the 17th-century European art movements, focusing on detailed representations of fruit, vessels, and natural elements. The style emphasises realistic textures, dramatic contrast between light and shade, and balanced geometric composition.

Traditional oil paintings utilise natural pigments suspended in drying oils, such as linseed oil, applied onto stretched cotton or linen canvas. Decorative frames are typically constructed from carved or moulded timber finished with gilding, plaster, or varnish.

Evaluation involves inspecting natural surface craquelure, paint oxidation, canvas weave composition, and wood stretcher construction. Rear examination frequently reveals natural timber aging, historic framer labels, or traditional stretcher key joints.

Position the framed canvas as a central focal point above a dining room sideboard, chimney breast, or entryway console table. Pairing traditional oil art with modern furnishings creates an engaging contrast in transitional interior schemes.

Dust the frame and canvas surface lightly using a clean, soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents. Display the painting away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent varnish discolouration or canvas warping.
