The Bonnard of Fontainebleau: interior scene, colourist still life, ca 1940 oil on canvas

A lovely, light flooded interior by Gabriel Fournier (1893-1963), the artist affectionally called "the Bonnard of Fontainebleau".

As a youth, Gabriel Fournier was introduced to painting by artist Lucien Mainssieux, a family friend. He subsequently studied at the Grenoble art school , the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon and the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris.

In 1920s Montmartre and Montparnasse, he was close to artists from the School of Paris. He collaborated with Raoul Dufy and frequented the Rotonde, where he met Amedeo Modigliani, Moïse Kisling, Chaïm Soutine and Pablo Picasso. He was taken on by the mythical art dealer Léopold Zborowski and exhibited with Henri Matisse.

In 1928, he moved to Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the South of France. After returning to Paris , he lived in Fontainebleau from 1935. Our painting by Fournier bears on the verso a label with the artist's address and an exhibition (?) number.

Numerous works by the artist are in the Museum of Grenoble, as well as the Musée Hebert and the Musée Mainssieux. Our oil on canvas measures 46 x 33 cm and is signed at the lower right with the artist's stamp. It is presented in a frame by Paris master framers RG - - quite possibly the best framers in the world. The business was started in the late 19th century by Emile Gault, and by the mid 1930s, Picasso, Dali and Chagall could regularly be seen on RG’s premises to have their paintings framed.The overall framed size is 52.5 x 65.5 cm.
