John E. Aitken "A North Sea Haven" Watercolour

1900 - 1920
Description

Painter of coastal scenes, born in Liverpool, the son of James Aitken (1853-1935). He studied at the Manchester School of Art, Liverpool School of Art and Wallasey School of Art and he was also taught by his father. A prolific exhibitor, he showed at the RA, RSA, RI, RSW, RCamA, RWA and was an elected member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts, the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, the RSW, RCamA and an Associate of the RWA. He travelled across Europe, 1913-14 painting many pictures of Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Wales and Scotland and executed panels for British Railways. Examples of his work are to be found in several public collections including the Manx Museum and the Williamson Art Gallery. He was President of the Liver Sketching Club in 1935 and like his father, he lived in Port St. Mary, Isle of Man for many years.

"A North Sea Haven " is a watercolour measuring 13" x 20". It is signed lower left and is framed giving an overall size of 21" x 28". On the back is a nice old label for Charles Rowley & Co., Manchester.
