This Victorian antique storage cabinet from around 1850 is built from richly figured rosewood with a deep brown grain and stands on a plain plinth base. The rectangular top sits above a pair of doors with carved corner scrolls, inset brass wire grilles, and cream pleated fabric panels. A small circular brass escutcheon keyhole sits between the two doors, which are framed by simple wooden mouldings. Measuring 85 cm high, 127.5 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, the unit provides compact storage capacity. Placed against a wall in a living room, hallway, or dining room, the cabinet stores books, table linens, dinnerware, or media equipment while displaying decorative objects on the timber surface above. The neutral tones of the fabric behind the brass wire complement traditional and transitional interior schemes, adding warmth and texture to domestic spaces.

FAQs

Mid-19th century Victorian side cabinets often featured figure-rich rosewood veneers, low-profile silhouettes, and doors set with decorative brass wire grilles backed by pleated fabric inserts.

Craftsmen during this era predominantly utilised solid pine or oak carcases veneered in thick rosewood, fitted with woven brass wirework, silk or cotton lining, and brass mortise locks.

Authentic pieces display distinct dark grain patterns typical of historical rosewood species, hand-cut dovetail joinery on internal elements, original brass fittings, and natural wear along the plinth base.

Position the cabinet as a hallway credenza or dining room buffet, balancing the deep timber tones with modern artwork, minimalist lighting, or contemporary ceramic vessels.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer movement, apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, and clean the brass wirework gently with a soft brush.
