Victorian Figured Walnut Single Mirrored Wardrobe, C.1870

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome Victorian figured walnut single wardrobe, dating from the second half of the 19th century, with particularly attractive colour and figuring. The detachable moulded cornice sits above a full-length mirrored door, framed in figured walnut and flanked by carved corbels. The door opens to a spacious hanging interior retaining its wooden hanging pegs and rail, with a useful deep drawer below. The wardrobe retains what appears to be its original silvered mirror plate, which has developed attractive age-related foxing and sparkle. The figured walnut veneers are particularly appealing, with a warm, mellow colour and good period patina.

A well-proportioned and practical Victorian wardrobe, narrow enough to work particularly well in a bedroom, dressing room or guest room.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 200cm

Width: 107.5cm

Depth: 67cm

Please note: although the cornice and mirrored door can be removed for transport, the main carcass does not dismantle. Buyers are therefore advised to check access, particularly staircases, turns and doorways, before purchasing.

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition, commensurate with age and use. The walnut retains an attractive colour and figuring throughout, with various marks, knocks, scratches and minor veneer losses expected from over 150 years of use, including sections of veneer loss on the rear of the sides of the plinth. The wardrobe retains what appears to be its original silvered mirror plate, displaying attractive age-related foxing and sparkle. The door operates well and the wardrobe is solid, stable and ready for use.

Overall, a very presentable example retaining good colour, attractive figured veneers and plenty of period character.

As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If any dimensions are critical, please check these with us before purchasing.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian single mirrored wardrobes typically feature a tall, narrow silhouette designed for compact spaces or secondary bedrooms. They commonly incorporate high-quality wood veneers, a single door with a full-length central mirror, carved accent corbels, and a prominent moulded cornice atop a sturdy plinth base.

During the mid-to-late Victorian period, cabinetmakers frequently utilised fine timber veneers such as figured walnut or mahogany over solid pine or deal carcasses. The mirror plates were created using thick bevelled or flat silvered glass, complemented by brass locks, hinges, and carved wooden timber detailing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery inside internal drawers, hand-planed back panels, and secondary construction timbers like pine. Original mirror plates often display subtle age spots or foxing, while decorative features like carved corbels will show evidence of hand-carving rather than modern machine moulding.

A single walnut wardrobe works well as a focal piece in a modern bedroom or wide hallway, offering vertical storage without overwhelming the footprint. To style it effectively, balance the deep timber tones with neutral wall paint, simple linen textiles, and clean-lined contemporary lighting.

Preserve figured walnut veneers by keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish.
