Large Sunderland Pink Lustre Jug Circa 1800 Maritime Theme

19th century
Description

This is a good large early 19th century Sunderland pink lustre jug in really great condition with colourful hand painted masted ships and maritime verse.

No winds or waves our progress check,

Our course we must persue,

And though the vessel fears a wreck,

She’s saved with all her crew.

The large piece has bold pink lustre sponged decoration and a further charming verse “To a Friend”

When in solemn secret prayer,

When your spirit finds access,

When you breath in all your cares,

Sweetly at the of grace,

Me to Jesus then commend,

Think upon an absent friend.

This is likely from Scott's Southwick pottery or the Dawson factory in Low Ford where these were manufactured. This is a great example of charming early Sunderland pottery. Dixons pottery was also known as Garrison pottery from the factory in Southwick, Sunderland.

No damage or restoration, tiny manufacturing chip to the rim which is over glazed.

A really charming jug circa 1800.

The jug measures 24 cms high and is 22cms in diameter by 30 cms wide overall including the handle.

UK insured packing and delivery is £15

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sunderland pink lustreware refers to a type of 19th-century British pottery characterised by a metallic, iridescent pink glaze created using gold chloride solutions, produced predominantly in the Wearside region of England.

These items were typically crafted from earthenware or creamware clay, decorated with printed enamel transfers, and finished with a metallic glaze wash to produce the reflective lustre effect.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic splash or marbled metallic glaze effects, transfer-printed maritime or poetic verses within reserve panels, and age-appropriate glaze crazing.

Place the jug as a focal display piece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or open shelving unit, paired with simple neutral ceramics to highlight its metallic finish.

Wash gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals, or dishwashers that could strip the delicate metallic surface layer.
