Augustin Edouart Cut Silhouette of a Bouncy Dog

Description

Silhouettist Augustin Edouart has successfully caught the energy and movement of this little dog as it leaps in the air.

This delightful cut silhouette has been extracted from the artist’s Scrapbook of practice and experimental cuttings. Most of Edouart’s archive of work was lost to the sea when he was shipwrecked off the coast of Guernsey in 1829. Some years ago a salvaged scrapbook came to light in a Parisian bookshop and this is the source of this unique cutting.

The silhouette is presented in a period ambrotype frame with a decorative gilt border. There is a stamp of authenticity within.

Cut-paper silhouettes became popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as an affordable method of portraiture before the advent of photography. Artists used fine scissors or scalpels to cut profile shapes from black paper, which were then mounted on lighter backings.

Traditional silhouettes were created using matte black paper mounted onto cream cardstock or plaster. These paper cutouts were typically set inside brass pinchbeck mounts, gilded frames, or papier-mache frames protected by flat or convex glass.

Authentic pieces display precise hand-cut edges under magnification rather than printed borders, alongside natural paper oxidation, faint foxing, and era-appropriate framing components such as original brass hangers or trade labels on the reverse.
