Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fire screens featuring Oriental motifs gained widespread popularity in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries alongside the Chinoiserie movement. Originally functional items designed to shield face and clothing from intense hearth heat, these screens quickly evolved into decorative canvases showcasing Asian lacquerwork, faux bamboo framing, and hand-painted naturalistic scenes.

Victorian and Edwardian fire screens typically featured frames constructed from turned hardwoods such as beech, oak, or mahogany, often carved or painted to resemble bamboo. The central panels were frequently created using stretched canvas, silk, glass, or wooden boards finished with oil paints, japanning, or lacquer coatings.

Authentic period fire screens display signs of age such as micro-craquelure in the painted surfaces, slight unevenness in hand-carved joinery, and natural wear around the feet and handles. Genuine lacquer or japanned finishes often exhibit subtle oxidisation and depth that modern synthetic reproductions cannot replicate.

An antique fire screen can be positioned in an unused fireplace opening or placed alongside a hearth to soften structural lines. It also serves effectively as a standalone decorative floor piece in an entryway, conservatory, or alcove to introduce texture and historical interest.

Maintain the screen by dusting it regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or a natural feather duster. Avoid using water, chemical solvents, or aerosol polishes on hand-painted lacquer panels, as moisture and harsh additives can cause pigment lift or damage the protective finish.
