Landscape Oil Painting of Figures Near a Harvest Field by Walter Heath Williams

19th century
For Sale by Benton Fine Art
Description

Walter Heath Williams

British, (Act.1841-1876)

Figures near a Harvest Field

Oil on canvas

Image size: 17.5 inches x 25.5 inches

Size including frame: 23.75 inches x 31.75 inches

Provenance: Haynes Fine Art, Broadway

A restful landscape painting of figures on a country track by Walter Heath Williams. A figure can be seen sat on a bank near a small pond, as a woman approaches with a basket. Beyond the path lies a cornfield where other figures are shown harvesting wheat and stacking them into shocks.

Walter Heath Williams was a landscape painter who was working from the early 1840’s until the late 1870’s. Little is known about Williams’s life and he is often confused with the artist Walter Williams (1834-1906) and William Williams of Plymouth (1808-1895) who both exhibited at the Royal Academy. It is possible that this was a pseudonym for another artist, a device often used by artists who were contracted to work for a gallery.

Although he rarely signed his work, his paintings are distinctive with his use of fine brushstrokes, a soft palette and glowing light. He is known to have painted landscapes, particularly harvest scenes as well as river views and was a master of capturing peaceful little spots of nature with their hidden homesteads and winding paths, represented beautifully in this painting. Some of his known works were of Hampshire and the Thames valley area so he may have had a connection to the Williams family of Barnes.

Examples of his work can be found in the Government Art Collection and the Herbert Art Gallery.

Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape paintings frequently depict rural idealisation, agricultural scenes, and detailed renderings of natural light, reflecting the eras appreciation for pastoral British scenery.

Paintings from this era were created using oil pigments on stretched linen canvas, typically mounted inside heavy timber frames finished with detailed moulded plaster and gold leaf ornamentation.

Authentic period pieces display natural craquelure throughout the paint layers, darkening of the canvas on the reverse side, period-correct framing techniques, and verifiable artist signatures.

Position the painting centrally above a dark wood sideboard, desk, or fireplace mantelpiece to create a classic focal point within both contemporary and traditional rooms.

Maintain the artwork by dusting the frame gently with a soft dry brush, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight or damp environments, and avoiding liquid cleaners on canvas or gilt surfaces.
