19th century
For Sale by Jeckyll & Co
Description

Constructed from mahogany, ash and pine

A simple and useful piece of furniture. The size is rare, Scotch chests are more typically large and heavy with six deep drawers enclosed by large turned columns. This is example is far more restrained, the decorative interest being its size, the quality of the timber and the shaped serpentine top.

Well presented overall, nice quality timber. Small section of moulding missing from the corner of the bottom drawer and a couple of fine splits to l/h side, see images.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scotch chests are traditional Scottish storage pieces typically characterised by deep proportions, flame mahogany veneers, and drawer configurations built above a solid plinth base.

Cabinet makers during the second half of the 19th century utilised solid pine or oak drawer linings with flame mahogany veneers, joined with hand-cut dovetails and fitted with turned timber knobs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back panels, natural timber shrinkage across wide surfaces, original brass locks, and turned wooden handles.

A dark timber chest provides visual weight in modern spaces when positioned against neutral walls, complemented by modern lighting fixtures, abstract wall art, and minimalist decorative items.

Regular dusting with a soft dry microfibre cloth and annual applications of clear beeswax polish will maintain the lustre, while positioning away from direct heat sources prevents timber movement.
