A mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking technique developed in the 17th century that allowed artists to create soft tonal variations, light, and shadow without cross-hatching. During the Restoration era, it became the primary method for reproducing grand painted portraits for aristocratic collections and public dissemination.

Mezzotints were crafted using a copper plate roughened uniformly with a metal tool called a rocker. Ink was applied to the plate, scraped back in lighter areas, and transferred onto laid rag paper using an etching press.

Authentic period mezzotints feature visible indentation marks around the image border from the copper plate, rich velvety blacks, tonal gradients, and chain lines visible when holding the handmade paper up to light.
