Small Mahogany Commode C.1840

19th century
Description

Unusually small French Louis Philippe mahogany commode or chest of drawers c.1840. Just 32½" wide. Black slate top with rounded front corners over a chest of four drawers. Shallower top drawer with a shaped front continued on the cabinet sides. Attractively figured and symmetrically arranged flame mahogany veneers across the drawer fronts, with inlaid brass escutcheons. Mahogany veneered sides and raised on a moulded plinth. Some minor repairs to the veneers, otherwise excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Keys supplied.

A commode is a low cabinet or chest of drawers introduced in 18th-century France and widely produced across Europe throughout the 19th century. Mahogany variants were favoured during the Georgian and Victorian eras for their durability and rich figure.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany framework with flame mahogany veneer panels applied to drawer fronts. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, complemented by slate, marble, or timber tops and brass escutcheons.

Authentic 1840s commodes display hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, hand-planed back panels, and natural wear consistent with mid-19th-century joinery. The timber displays deep patination, and drawer lock mechanisms feature era-appropriate iron or brass construction.
