Gents Smiths Wrist Watch, C1950

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents Smiths wrist watch, c1950.

The watch has a 15-jewel hand-winding movement, stamped Made in England, which is working nicely.

The watch measures 31mm diameter excluding the winding crown, which is possibly a period replacement, and the horn lugs. The case is chromium plated while the case back is stainless steel. The case is in good condition with just general light marking, nothing serious at all.

The lens looks good to the naked eye, light marking if viewed through a jeweller’s loupe.

The signed dial is in its original finish with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Smiths was a major British manufacturer known for producing domestic timepieces and military instruments throughout the mid-20th century. Their wristwatches from the 1950s represent a prominent era of English horological manufacturing prior to the quartz revolution.

Wristwatches of this era typically featured chrome-plated or stainless steel cases paired with acrylic crystals and brass mechanical movements. Straps were commonly crafted from natural leather, often embossed with reptilian textures.

Authentic examples feature dial markings such as Smiths and Made in England across the lower perimeter. Inspection of the internal mechanical movement reveals stamped branding, jewel count, and calibre reference numbers standard for mid-century production.

A classic mid-century wristwatch with a leather strap serves as a understated accessory for formal tailoring or smart-casual dress. Neutral leather tones and analog dial configurations complement modern suits and structured knitwear.

Keep mechanical timepieces away from moisture, strong magnetic fields, and extreme temperature changes. Regular servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years ensures correct gear lubrication and operational accuracy.
