English School (mid-19th Century), "the City of Carlisle taking troops to the Crimea", being a marine nautical profile of the merchantman barque "City of Carlisle", the vessel cutting through heavy blue-grey waters, under a cloud-swept sky, her sails unfurled and swelled with a sea breeze, with neat rows of British Army red coats standing on the deck, the lower border inscribed, "City of Carlisle launched 1853, built by R Thompson, Sunderland, taking troops to the Crimea", oil on card, in a gilt-wood inner slip and reeded oak frame under glass, 63 cm x 76 cm [The City of Carlisle was a 936-ton merchant barque built in Sunderland, UK, in 1853 by R. Thompson. Registered in Newcastle, the vessel primarily operated as a merchantman, transporting general cargo and troops (notably during the Crimean War). The ship was later documented in Australian passenger records, indicating a life of global voyages]
