Late 19th Century Renaissance Knight Oil Painting Circle of Sir John Gilbert Ra

19th century
Description

An atmospheric late 19th century British historical oil painting depicting an armoured Renaissance knight riding beneath a Gothic cloister with two mounted attendants.

The nobleman wears polished fluted armour and an elaborate feathered plume. He is mounted upon a powerful piebald charger with richly decorated ceremonial tack. Two guards on horseback follow through the shadowed Gothic archway, creating a compelling sense of procession, movement and Victorian historical drama.

Silver grey highlights across the armour contrast with the warm ochres, siennas and deep brown tones of the stone architecture. The piebald horse is particularly striking, with a muscular body, arched neck and elevated movement. A chestnut horse ridden by the nearer attendant adds warmth and compositional balance.

The scene represents a romantic Victorian interpretation of Renaissance ceremony rather than a specific recorded historical event. It would make an impressive statement piece for a country house, library, study, entrance hall or collection of Victorian, equestrian, military or historical art.

Sir John Gilbert And His Circle

Sir John Gilbert RA was an influential British painter, illustrator and draughtsman celebrated for historical, literary, military and Shakespearean subjects. His works frequently explored medieval history, chivalric romance, mounted figures, ceremonial armour and Renaissance pageantry.

Gilbert was knighted in 1872 and elected a full Royal Academician in 1876. His theatrical compositions and richly coloured historical scenes influenced many British artists during the second half of the 19th century.

This painting shares characteristics associated with Gilberts historical imagery, including mounted figures, elaborate armour, Gothic architecture, rich colouring and dramatic narrative.

It is catalogued as Circle of Sir John Gilbert RA, indicating a work by an unidentified artist associated with his artistic environment or influence. This attribution does not claim that the painting was executed by Gilbert himself.

Frame And Plaque

Presented in a substantial traditional gilt frame with an older brass plaque engraved Sir John Gilbert RSA.

Gilbert correctly used the designation RA rather than RSA. The plaque is therefore considered a later collectors attribution and not documentary proof of authorship. It nevertheless forms part of the paintings collecting history.

Provenance

Private collection.

Sold through Lindsay Burns and Company, Perth, Scotland, in June 2026 and catalogued as Sir John Gilbert RSA, A Knight on Horseback with Two Attendant Guards on Horseback.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century historical narrative paintings frequently depicted scenes from medieval and Renaissance history, focusing on chivalry, knightly armour, and dramatic figurative compositions inspired by literature and military heritage.

Paintings from this period were rendered in oil pigments on canvas or wooden panels and typically set within timber frames decorated with plaster gesso moulding and finished with metallic leaf gilding.

Authentic period artworks display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, oxidisation on the canvas backing, period timber stretchers, and natural wear to the gilded frame.

A classical framed painting can serve as a focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or console table, where the detailed subject matter and gilded frame contrast against modern, understated backdrop tones.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, open flames, and high humidity, dusting the frame and surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush without liquid cleaners.
