Donald Mcintyre (1923 - 2009) Oil on Board

1940 - 1960
Description

A coastal croft with haystacks and cottages, oil on board

A bold and expressive coastal landscape depicting a cluster of whitewashed cottages with warm ochre roofs standing within an open field near the shoreline. In the foreground the land is rendered in rich, sweeping strokes of green, red and earthy brown, leading the eye toward the buildings which form the central focus of the composition.

Beside the cottages stand several rounded haystacks, painted in warm tones that echo the colour of the roofs, while beyond them a strip of deep blue-green sea sits beneath a muted sky. The painting is executed with confident, energetic brushwork and a vibrant palette typical of McIntyre’s work, conveying both the texture of the land and the rugged character of coastal crofting landscapes.

Signed D. McIntyre lower right.

Presented in a glazed frame and mount.

Donald McIntyre was a post-impressionist painter heavily influenced by the Scottish Colourist tradition. His work is known for bold palette knife application, strong structural composition, and vivid capture of coastal light across Scotland and Wales.

Mid-20th-century artist oil paintings frequently utilised oil-based pigments applied to rigid masonite or hardboard panels. This solid backing provided a sturdy surface capable of supporting heavy impasto without flexing or cracking.

Authentic paintings typically feature the artists signature D MCINTYRE in block capitals, often in the lower corner. Signature characteristics include thick, direct palette knife marks, distinct coastal cottage subjects, and original gallery provenance labels on the reverse.

A textured coastal oil painting works well as a focal point above a timber sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. Pair it with natural materials such as oak, linen, and ceramic stoneware to echo the organic feel of the landscape.

Keep the artwork out of direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Clean dust away gently using a dry, soft-haired brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, cloths, or chemical solvents which can damage the varnish and paint surface.
