British Military Cast Brass Warning Bell

1920 - 1940
Description

A substantial, authentic British Military issue handbell, cast in heavy solid brass.

The face of the bell features a prominent and crisp hand-engraved Broad Arrow mark—the traditional pheon stamp indicating British Government and War Department issue. This specific pattern of heavy handbell was widely deployed on the Home Front by Air Raid Precautions (ARP) Wardens to sound localized gas and air raid warnings.

The bell retains its 100% original, ergonomically turned hardwood handle, securely set into a multi-tiered brass ferrule collar. The wood exhibits a beautiful natural grain and a rich, honeyed patina from historical use.

Internally, the bell is complete and unaltered, retaining its authentic hand-forged iron clapper suspended from the integral cast internal loop. It functions perfectly, producing an incredibly loud, clear, and resonant warning tone.

The entire piece remains in excellent antique condition with an honest, undisturbed mellow patina to the brass. A fantastic, fully operational piece of British wartime social history.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British military handbells were functional acoustic signalling instruments used across naval vessels, barracks, and field posts to issue warnings, mark watch changes, or signal alarms. These pieces were produced under contract for military departments and typically stamped with official government markings.

These bells are predominantly constructed from heavy cast brass or bronze alloys chosen for tone and corrosion resistance, fitted with an internal iron or brass clapper, and topped with a turned hardwood handle anchored by a brass ferrule.

Authentic military pieces frequently feature stamped or cast ordnance marks, most notably the broad arrow (pheon) symbol, alongside maker marks or inspection numbers. They also exhibit heavy casting weight, robust joinery at the handle, and natural aged oxidation.

A cast brass bell serves as a tactile accent on a wooden bookshelf, a dark mahogany desk, or a mantelpiece, where its historic metalwork provides warmth and texture alongside leather-bound books and tailored furnishings.

Dust the item regularly with a soft dry cloth. To maintain the original aged patina, avoid harsh chemical polishes; if polishing is desired, use a micro-crystalline wax on the brass while keeping oils and metal cleaners off the turned timber handle.
