Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 17th century, relief-carved timber panels depicting scriptural narratives were commonly incorporated into interior panelling, wainscoting, chests, and furniture. These carvings served both decorative and instructional purposes within domestic and ecclesiastical settings across Europe.

These panels were typically crafted from native hardwoods, predominantly European oak, using hand chisels, gouges, and mallets. Joiners and carvers worked along the grain, finishing pieces with natural oil or beeswax treatments to protect the timber.

Authentic period pieces display hand-tool marks, natural timber shrinkage across the grain, and uneven wear consistent with age. Look for deep patination in recessed areas, hand-forged joinery, and natural oxidisation of the wood fibres over centuries.

A carved relief panel can be mounted on a neutral wall as a standalone piece of architectural art, or displayed on a mantelpiece. Combining dark carved timber with modern minimal lighting creates a contrast that highlights the sculptural detail.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry brush to clean deep relief areas without scratching the timber. Keep the panel away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the protective patination.
