Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This late seventeenth-century Jacobean dresser base is an English country house piece constructed from oak with a dark brown finish and brass hardware. The structural framework presents a rectangular top surface positioned above three horizontal drawers. Each drawer front displays geometric raised mouldings, circular brass knobs, and round brass escutcheons surrounding the keyholes. The vertical stiles between the drawers feature applied split spindle mouldings, while the outer corners are similarly detailed. Support is provided by two prominent turned front legs connected to plain rear supports beneath the apron. The wood surfaces exhibit a visible grain pattern with aged warmth and a dark brown patina. Practical applications for this furnishing include placement as a sideboard surface in a dining room or hallway for display purposes and small item storage within the drawers. Measuring 150 cm in length, the dresser base accommodates various interior spaces as a functional storage table. The combination of geometric panels, turned wooden supports, and brass elements reflects the craftsmanship of the late 1600s.

A dresser base, also known as a low dresser or server, originated in late 17th-century Britain as a shallow storage cabinet used in dining spaces for serving food or displaying tableware.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid native English oak, featuring hand-planed plank tops, pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, and hand-carved geometric drawer fronts.

Look for signs of period craftsmanship such as hand-tooling, hand-cut dovetails, wooden peg joinery, uneven drawer linings, and natural timber shrinkage over time.

A late 17th-century oak dresser base serves effectively as a hallway console or dining room server, balanced by modern artwork or contemporary ceramic vessels placed on top.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and severe humidity fluctuations.
