Description

This is a fine quality English 18th century style antique fire grate, incorporating a neo-classical design, made from solid cast iron, circa 1920, in excellent original condition. Benefitting from a freestanding neo-classical / renaissance design, this antique cast iron log grate features a domed backplate, decorated with an embossed neo-classical urn and floral swag motif design. The cast iron fireplace grate is constructed with two taller dome caped legs at the rear, and two smaller shaped legs at the front, which support four flat capped finials. The Georgian style fire grate frame is constructed with a castellated basket, incorporating decorative riveted studs and vertical spike bars for keeping the logs in place. The internal floor grate can be removed from the basket, allowing for easy cleaning. The antique fire place grate can be used with either wood logs or coal. The 18th century style fire grate is constructed of cast and hand forged iron and the open fire grate features an attractive finish, giving it a lovely colour and appearance.

This neo-classical period fire basket would look superb in a variety of open hearths, inglenooks or fireside locations. The cast iron log grate would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it not only extremely functional but also highly decorative, which can also house floral displays.

This is a fine quality antique English traditional 18th century style fire basket, incorporating a neo-classical design, made from cast iron, circa 1870, in excellent condition.

The cast iron frame and brass finials have been cleaned and sealed. The antique heart grate is solid in joint and is robust. Nominal old use marks, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. There are no breaks to the cast iron basket. The twin internal grate floors are sturdy in good condition. The grate features an attractive finish, giving it a lovely colour and appearance. This log basket is reassuringly solid and heavy, and it is ready to use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical fire grates originated in the late 18th century, drawing inspiration from classical Greek and Roman motifs such as urns, drapery, and urn-shaped finials. During the early 20th century, foundries revived these historical designs to suit period-style fireplaces in suburban and town houses.

Traditional fire grates are constructed primarily from heavy cast iron due to its durability, heat retention, and resistance to high temperatures. Some decorative variations incorporate brass details, polished steel elements, or wrought iron bars.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy weight, clear casting seam lines, and detailed decorative relief work. Authentic historic castings often feature distinct maker marks, uniform surface texture, and natural patina or minor surface oxidisation from historical heat exposure.

A period fire grate can be integrated into a traditional chimney breast or placed inside a minimalist contemporary hearth to create textural contrast. It can function as an active wood-burning basket or serve as a decorative focal point filled with dried logs or LED lighting display elements.

To preserve cast iron, remove ash after use and scrub the surface with a wire brush or fine steel wool to clean soot accumulation. Apply traditional graphite black grate polish using a soft cloth to restore depth of colour and protect the iron against rust.
