Pair of Watercolours of Game Birds by George Rankin

1920 - 1940
Description

"Scottish Grouse" and "Partridge"

by George James Rankin (1883 - 1959)

A good pair of watercolours of game birds by George Rankin. They are both very well painted and signed in the lower left corners. Both are framed in their original good quality gilt frames with gilt mounts which are titled.

There are slight differences between the frames but the paintings display very well as a pair.

The paintings are in good order. There are some minor surface marks and signs of age but no major damages or blemishes. There are a few small knocks and losses around the frames but overall they display well.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British game bird watercolours from this period typically depict native species such as grouse, partridge, and pheasant in detailed naturalistic landscapes, reflecting the sporting traditions of the era.

These artworks were executed using water-based pigments on paper or board, frequently set within composition or giltwood frames with deep inner mounts to create visual focus.

Authentic watercolours display subtle variation in paint density, visible pencil underdrawing, and paper grain, whereas mechanical reproductions exhibit uniform dot matrix patterns under magnification.

A pair of framed bird paintings creates balance when hung symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table within traditional, rustic, or country-inspired spaces.

Artworks on paper should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent foxing and fading, while glass surfaces should be cleaned gently using a dry microfibre cloth.
