Large Framed Engraving – The Sabbath Breakers After J. C. Dollman, 1896

19th century
Description

A large and impressive late 19th century engraved print entitled “The Sabbath Breakers”, after the celebrated 1896 painting by J. C. Dollman. The scene depicts an early game of golf being played upon a windswept links course, with two golfers interrupted by sternly dressed observers, creating one of the most recognisable and humorous golfing images of the Victorian period.

Beautifully engraved with exceptional tonal detail, the composition captures the texture of the landscape, the characterful expressions of the figures, and the period golfing attire with remarkable clarity. The title appears within the lower margin together with the explanatory inscription, while the engraving is presented behind a wide mount and housed in a substantial quarter-sawn oak frame with gilt slip and decorative moulded inner border.

Combining sporting history, Victorian social commentary and decorative appeal, this is an excellent piece for a study, library, golf club or country house interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian narrative engravings depict storytelling scenes from everyday life, history, or social commentary. Produced via steel plate etching or photogravure techniques in the late nineteenth century, these prints brought narrative fine art into domestic interiors.

Prints from this era were commonly mounted behind glass using acid-free or pulp-board mounts and framed in solid hardwoods such as quarter-sawn oak or mahogany. A narrow gilt inner slip moulding was frequently used to create visual separation between the mount and timber frame.

Authentic prints feature plate impressions or visible dot/hatch patterns characteristic of photogravure or line etching under magnification. Original publisher details, artist signatures, and dates are typically printed along the lower margin beneath the main image.

Large monochrome prints complement traditional studies, libraries, and hallways. The combination of warm oak timber and neutral monochrome tones allows them to anchor wood-panelled walls or provide historic contrast against contemporary paint palettes.

Hang artwork away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent paper foxing and frame warping. Clean glass surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid sprays near the timber edge or paper mount.
