A 19th Century African Tribal Carved Fertility Figure

This tribal hand carved figure is made from dense, rich hardwood and shows a female tribal figure kneeling whilst being heavily pregnant.

The figure has developed a terrific dry patina with burnished and polished high spots caused by tactile handling.

These figures were prized within the tribal community as good luck and well being symbols which aided fertility and a safe pregnancy.

This piece has been kept as part of a very old collection, and it is the first time it has been offered for sale since at least the 1950s.
