Vintage Fire Bin on Wheels from Richard Arkwright Masson Mills

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

“Masson Mill was built in 1783 and proclaims Arkwright’s growing wealth and self confidence. Unlike the mills at Cromford, it is built on a major river, the river Derwent, which offered Arkwright the opportunity of a power source ten times greater than he enjoyed at his Cromford site. The mills are part Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site and are now home to a textile museum”

We are fortunate to have purchased the fire bins direct from the mill which would have been used in the winding shed. This is going to make a fabulous log holder or maybe cane or umbrella holder with its genuine worn look and feel to the red paint and black lettering “ FOR FIRE ONLY”. It sits well on the 4 heavy castors which are spinning well and we also have a lid!

Price is for 1 we have two.

A truly tremendous opportunity to own a piece from a historic English mill in lovely historic and time worn condition.

Overall: Height 79cm and 82.5 to Top of Handle x Width 53.5cm x Depth 35.5cm

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Industrial fire bins were placed throughout 19th and 20th-century textile mills and manufacturing plants as emergency hazard equipment, holding water, sand, or fire-extinguishing blankets to quickly suppress small blazes.

These utility bins were constructed from heavy-gauge galvanised steel or iron sheets, finished with protective painted coatings, fitted with solid lids, and mounted on cast iron swivel castors for quick mobility.

Authentic pieces feature original hand-painted or stencilled safety lettering, heavy cast iron hardware, thick riveted or folded metal joints, and genuine operational wear such as paint flaking and surface oxidisation.

An industrial fire bin serves function as a fireside log container, umbrella holder in an entryway, or characterful dry storage solution in living rooms and home offices.

Preserve the original patina by brushing away loose debris, wiping clean with a dry cloth, and applying a clear microcrystalline wax or seal coat to stabilise flaking paint and protect against active rust.
