Three 'Triumph of Alexander' Prints by Le Brun

Description

A rare set of three 18th century, or earlier, etchings from the series of paintings depicting the Triumphs of Alexander the Great by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) in their original frames with hand written annotations to the reverse. To the top is an early inventory note stating 'Effets de Mr G.me Bonnemaison (aîné) Le 1817' which could be a reference to Fereol Bonnemaison (1766-1827) a French portrait painter, lithographer, restorer, and art dealer. These three examples show The Battle with King Porus of India, The Battle of Granicus and The Battle of Arbella. As you would expect from prints this old they are stained, have some insect damage and the frames have old long dead worm holes. Good honest early examples of a series of prints popular throughout the Enlightenment of the 18th century and Neoclassicism of the 19th century. France, circa 1740.

The Triumph of Alexander series comprises engraved reproductions of history paintings originally commissioned by King Louis XIV of France, designed by Charles Le Brun in the seventeenth century to depict the military victories of Alexander the Great.

These works were created using copperplate engraving techniques on handmade laid paper, printed with carbon-based black inks and mounted within timber frames.

Authentic period engravings display a distinct plate mark impression around the border of the image, evidence of laid paper lines when held to light, and characteristic line cross-hatching created by the engraver burin.
