A large and shapely Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Transfer Printed Pottery Jug, attractively decorated in a magenta palette with harbour scenes and classical temples. Attributed by the vendor to Thomas Fell of St. Peter's Pottery, Newcastle upon Tyne, but as the piece is unmarked, we are unable to offer any evidence to support this attribution.

Georgian transferware refers to earthenware ceramics produced during the Georgian period decorated using a copperplate printing technique. Patterns were transferred from an engraved copper plate onto tissue paper, which was then applied to the unglazed ceramic body before firing and glazing.

These vessels were typically crafted from earthenware, ironstone, or creamware. The decoration relied on cobalt, manganese, or iron-based oxide inks under a clear lead glaze to create distinct monochrome patterns.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine surface crazing in the glaze, slight irregularities in the print alignment where paper seams met, and foot rims free of glaze. Makers marks or impressed numbers on the underside also assist in dating.
