Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century French genre painting focused on scenes of daily life, often imbued with emotional narrative and moral sentimentality. Made popular by artists such as Jean-Baptiste Greuze, these works moved away from grand mythological themes toward intimate human expressions and domestic drama.

Paintings from this period were typically executed with oil pigments ground in linseed or walnut oil onto hand-stretched linen canvas. Frames were constructed from timber, embellished with carved gesso detailing, and finished with real gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period paintings display natural craquelure patterns across the paint surface caused by uneven drying and age. Additional indicators include hand-cut wooden stretchers, historical canvas weave density, dark ground preparation layers, and natural oxidisation on the timber reverse and gilding.

An 18th-century oil portrait creates an effective focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or sideboard. It can be paired with modern minimalist furniture to provide a textured historical contrast or integrated into a gallery wall with mixed period frames.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, heating sources, and areas of high humidity to prevent warping and pigment fading. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid applying water or chemical cleaners directly to the varnish or giltwood.
