Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Landscape art of the 18th century frequently focused on classical proportions, romanticised rural views, and atmospheric light effects inspired by classical European masters. Artists emphasized balance, natural topographies, and idyllic country subjects framed by architectural ruins or dramatic foliage.

These works were typically created using oil pigments suspended in linseed oil, applied onto stretched hand-woven linen or hemp canvas. The accompanying frames were constructed from carved timber coated with gesso and decorated with hand-applied gold leaf.

Authentic period works display fine networks of age craquelure across the paint surface, historic keys and stretcher bars, and evidence of hand-carved wood in the framing. Patinated gilding and oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas are also typical indicators of age.

An antique oil painting serves as a key visual focal point when positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or a dining room sideboard. Pairing dark, historic canvas art with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced contrast within modern living spaces.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, drafty areas, and fluctuating heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the gilt frame gently with a dry, soft brush, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning the canvas surface.
