Gents 1950s Primula Automatic Wrist Watch

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents 1950s Primula automatic wrist watch.

The watch has a good quality 18-jewel Felsa 410 automatic Bidynator movement which is working nicely. Early automatic watches had been powered with bumper movements. Rolex subsequently developed a full rotor system where the rotor moved in one direction - this movement was protected by a patent. Felsa subsequently developed an automatic movement where the rotor moved in both directions and this bi-directional was duly named the Bidynator.

The watch measures 32mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case has a handsome chunkiness to it, it is stainless steel and it is in lovely condition. The screw-on case back states that the watch is waterproof but, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.

The lens is in very nice condition.

The is signed Primula, a name first registered by the Buses family of Berlin in 1910, and then again in 1950 by Gerhard Buses of Harrow, Middlesex. Buses was an importer of watches into the UK. The dial is in its original finish with original hands and a subsidiary seconds dial. A little marking to the dial but not too detrimental.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century Swiss automatic watches incorporate self-winding mechanical movements that tension the mainspring through movement of the arm. Design characteristics of this decade include mid-sized cases, cream or silver dials, geometric or Arabic hour markers, and integrated shock-absorption systems such as Incabloc.

Cases were predominantly manufactured from stainless steel, chrome-plated base metals, or solid gold. Dials featured painted or applied metal indices under acrylic crystal lenses, fitted to leather or woven metal straps.

Authentic period watches display precise Swiss manufacture markings on the dial face and movement, appropriate aging or patina across the dial, period-correct movement jewelling references, and mechanical components matching the eras technical standards.

Mechanical timepieces are frequently presented on bedside tables, dresser tops, or within valet trays alongside leather accessories to introduce texture and historical interest to personal dressing areas.

Mechanical watches require professional servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years to clean, lubricate, and adjust the movement. To prevent damage, keep the timepiece away from moisture, strong magnetic fields, and extreme temperatures.
