Hardwood Carving of a Fisherman Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

This exceptional Balinese dense hardwood figure is an amazing sculpture, hand carved from a single piece of wood with incredible skill. It is very similar to a good Japanese ivory piece in its carved detail.

The figure depicts a local Bali fisherman working in shallow water. His one foot is below the swirling waterline, whilst the other is raised onto a rock. He is concentrating and drawing in a weighted net with at least two trapped fish. The net is an amazing piece of work cut from the solid, leaving only woven platted cords of the net, each piece only a millimetre in thickness.

The man is semi naked with a fish basket tied to his waist and wearing only a loincloth and a woven hat. The details of his characterful face, hand and feet are outstanding, as are the details of his muscles and ribcage showing through his tense torso.

This fine carving is not to be mistaken for the normal excellent quality carvings from these Indonesian islands.

This piece has been produced by a master carver artist and is superb.

It is in excellent original condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hand-carved hardwood sculptures depicting traditional trades, rural workers, and cultural figures were widely produced across Asia and Europe for both regional appreciation and export markets.

Figures from this period were hand-carved from dense, heavy hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or rosewood, utilizing handheld chisels and gouges before being polished with wax or oil to accentuate the natural grain.

Authentic period carvings display distinct tool marks, fine age-related surface wear, natural shrinkage lines along the timber grain, and a deep, uneven patination resulting from decades of handling.

Display the sculpture on a sideboard, bookshelf, or console table alongside contemporary ceramics or neutral backdrop elements to create visual contrast and highlight the intricate timber details.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax paste polish annually, ensuring the sculpture is kept away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
