Portrait Of An Elegant Lady With Her Pet Dog, C.1690–1700; Studio Of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723), Oil On Canvas
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
A grand and highly decorative late Stuart portrait of a young lady with her pet dog, painted circa 1690–1700 and attributed to the Studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723), the leading portrait painter in England at the turn of the eighteenth century.
The sitter is shown three-quarter-length, seated in a wooded landscape, wearing a rich golden-brown gown over a white chemise. Resting affectionately at her lap is a small pet dog, an elegant and meaningful addition which in late seventeenth-century portraiture could symbolise fidelity, affection, domestic virtue and refined aristocratic leisure. The result is a particularly engaging image: formal enough for the grand portrait tradition, yet warmer and more intimate than many conventional country-house likenesses.
The painting belongs to a recognised type used by Kneller and his studio in the 1690s, in which fashionable female sitters are shown seated in landscape settings, often in loosely draped semi-classical dress. Comparable e...xamples include are in National Trust collections and demonstrate how Kneller’s studio reused and adapted successful compositional formulae for elite patrons.
Although the sitter is currently unidentified, the scale, costume and presentation indicate a woman of rank or fashion, most probably from the aristocracy, landed gentry or wealthy professional elite. Portraits of this type were often commissioned around marriage or early married life, functioning not only as likenesses but as statements of beauty, status, lineage and family continuity.
Sir Godfrey Kneller was born in Lübeck and settled in England in the 1670s. Following the death of Sir Peter Lely in 1680, he became the dominant portrait painter in Britain, serving successive monarchs and producing likenesses of kings, queens, courtiers, politicians and fashionable society. His large studio supplied portraits to many of the leading families of late Stuart and early Georgian England, establishing a visual language of aristocratic elegance that defined the period.
This impressive portrait is painted on the grand 50 x 40 inch scale associated with English country-house portraiture. The work presents beautifully in person, with strong decorative presence, attractive colouring and considerable period atmosphere.
Overall, this is a handsome and highly appealing late seventeenth-century English portrait: large in scale, decorative, scholarly in attribution, and unusually charming in its inclusion of the sitter’s pet dog. It would make a striking focal point in both a traditional or more contemporary interior.
