FAQs

The Dutch Manner in marine painting originates from the 17th-century Golden Age, characterised by dramatic skies, meticulous attention to maritime vessels, and a focus on realism and atmospheric light.

Traditional pieces are typically executed in oil paint on woven linen canvas, stretched over wooden bars and housed within moulded wood or gilt frames.

Authentic period works exhibit natural craquelure, oxidisation of the varnish, hand-stretched canvas with period-appropriate tacking, and construction methods consistent with historical framing techniques.

Pairing a traditional marine artwork with neutral walls allows the tonal palette to command focus, creating a focal point above a mantelpiece or within a study.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity levels, avoidance of direct sunlight to prevent pigment degradation, and periodic dusting with a soft, dry brush by a professional restorer.
