Watercolour Painting Heraldic Device

19th century
Description

A fine and decorative watercolour painted heraldic device. The piece is beautifully worked with a central shield, unusually surrounded by floral swags and highlighted with gold. Painted on paper the device is in superb condition with strong bright colours. The work is framed in a period gilt frame that is most likely the original. The frame is in good antique condition with the odd minor knock. A lovely example of a heraldic device, probably representing a marriage and unusual in that the motto is vacant. C.1850.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Heraldic paintings grew in popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as formal documentation of lineage, family alliances, and social standing. Artists specialized in translating complex armorial descriptions, known as blazons, into detailed watercolour illustrations.

These works were executed using fine watercolour and gouache paints applied to heavy rag paper or vellum. Frames were typically crafted from hand-carved or moulded timber finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period examples exhibit visible hand-painted brushwork under magnification rather than printed dots, period-appropriate paper yellowing or foxing, and original wood backing boards or antique gilding techniques.

Display these works as focal points within a gallery wall, aligned on a narrow wall space, or integrated into a library setting alongside dark wood furniture and leather-bound books.

Position the painting away from direct sunlight and moisture sources to prevent fading and paper warping. Clean the frame gently with a dry, soft brush and consider fitting UV-filtering glass to protect pigment integrity.
