Brief Description:

This is a superb 18th-century engraving depicting William Hogarth's 'The March to Finchley'.

Engraved / Published in 1750 by British engraver and assistant to William Hogarth, Luke Sullivan (1705-1771).

The fabulous, unrestored piece is mounted within its 18th-century ebonised and gilt-moulded Hogarth frame, retaining the original 18th-century glazed protective panel.

Note: This is an identical example that is currently displayed in the National Galleries of Scotland.

Both the artwork and the frame are offered in an overall excellent original condition commensurate with age.

There is one small brown mark approximately halfway across the inscription at the bottom of the engraving.

Eighteenth-century satirical engravings are printed artworks that use social commentary, political caricature, and narrative detail to critique contemporary society. Popularised in Britain by artists such as William Hogarth, these copperplate prints were widely reproduced and distributed throughout the Georgian period.

Georgian copperplate engravings were produced by etching or incising a design onto a copper plate, applying ink, and pressing the plate onto handmade rag paper. The resulting prints were often subsequently mounted and protected behind glass within moulded timber frames.
