Edwin Maxwell Fry RA (1899–1987) was one of Britain’s most influential twentieth-century architects. Born in Cheshire, he studied architecture at the University of Liverpool and began his career during the 1920s before becoming a leading figure in the Modern Movement.
Fry worked extensively in Britain, West Africa and India, producing innovative designs that combined modernist principles with practical responses to climate and local conditions. During his distinguished career he collaborated with a number of important architects, including his wife Jane Drew and, at various stages, Le Corbusier.
In recognition of his contribution to architecture and design, Fry was elected a Royal Academician. Today he is remembered as a pioneering modernist architect, author and educator whose work helped shape twentieth-century architecture
