Hand coloured botanical engraving, dating from the 1830s–1840s by Victorian engravers J. & J. Parkin.

Presented in a mid-toned natural wood frame with neutral mount.

One of a large group of 20 available. A wonderful cross-section of early Victorian garden favourites. Notable specimens include the "Royal Sovereign" Tulip, Florist Auriculas, Dahlias and Chrysanthemums, as well as charming mixed studies of pansies, morning glories, and salvias.

Condition: Good antique condition. In keeping with their age, the sheets and mounts exhibit areas of light foxing.

Early Victorian botanical engravings combine scientific botanical accuracy with aesthetic detail, produced via copperplate or steel engraving techniques. They were published in specialized botanical journals and horticultural works during the mid-nineteenth century, often finished by hand with watercolour tinting.

These prints were rendered on heavy rag paper using oil-based printing inks from engraved copper or steel plates. Watercolour glazes were subsequently applied by hand to add naturalistic colouration to the flower and foliage.

Authentic period engravings display a distinct indented plate mark around the printed border where the metal plate pressed into the paper. Examination under magnification reveals continuous hand-painted watercolour strokes rather than modern halftone dot patterns.

Botanical prints can be arranged in symmetrical grid formats or paired in small groupings along narrow corridors and alcoves. Framing them in neutral timber or simple gilded frames allows them to integrate into both traditional and modern minimal schemes.
