Arts & Crafts English Stained Glass Firescreen on Iron Stand

19th century
Description

A striking English Arts & Crafts period stained glass firescreen of elegant geometric design, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

The panel features richly coloured hand-cut stained glass in jewel tones of ruby red, turquoise, amber, green and mauve, arranged in a beautifully balanced symmetrical pattern with a central lozenge motif. The textured glass catches the light wonderfully, making this an exceptionally decorative interior piece whether positioned before a fireplace or displayed in a window setting.

The stained glass panel is housed within its original metal frame and raised on a decorative wrought iron stand with scroll carrying handle to the top.

An excellent example of Arts & Crafts craftsmanship with strong architectural presence and vibrant colour.

Dimensions:

Width: 48 cm

Condition:

Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with period use; just a couple of hairline cracks to the glass. The glass displays beautifully and the frame retains an attractive aged patina.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasized handmade craftsmanship over mass industrial production. Firescreens evolved from purely functional draft shields into artistic focal points, combining leaded stained glass with decorative metalwork to capture light from the hearth.

These screens typically feature hand-cut coloured glass held together by channelled lead strips called cames. The surrounding structural frame and feet were commonly wrought or cast from iron or brass to withstand heat and provide stability.

Authentic period examples display irregular lead cames, textured or hand-blown glass with minor air bubbles, and hand-finished ironwork. The metal frame typically exhibits natural oxidation, and the weight of the heavy iron base ensures stability.

Place the screen directly on a fireplace hearth to obscure an unlit fire grate, or position it near a window where natural sunlight can project coloured light across the floor. The geometric design balances both traditional period homes and modern minimalist spaces.

Clean the glass using a dry microfiber cloth or a mild water solution applied lightly to avoid disturbing the lead cames. Inspect the iron base periodically for rust and apply a thin layer of dark wax to preserve the metal patina.
