Edwardian furniture, dating from 1901 to 1910, is known for drawing inspiration from earlier eighteenth-century designs such as Hepplewhite and Sheraton. Pieces often feature lighter forms, high-quality mahogany or satinwood timbers, delicate inlay, and refined classical proportions.

Cabinetmakers during the Edwardian era primarily used solid mahogany and walnut, frequently accented with satinwood or rosewood crossbanding. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for internal drawer linings, held together with hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces display fine dovetailing on drawer joints, original brass hardware such as swan-neck or bail handles, and evidence of hand-finishing. Look for decorative features like inlaid stringing or satinwood borders around the drawer fronts.

A dark wood Edwardian chest provides visual weight and warmth when placed against neutral or contemporary wall finishes. Styling the top surface with simple ceramic vessels, modern lamps, or framed artwork balances the traditional character of the piece.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing along the direction of the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from splitting or fading.
