Circa 1890-1900 Large Scottish Coastal Watercolour: 'dunbar Castle' By John Moxon
£495 $671 €583
This substantial late Victorian maritime landscape depicts the historic ruins of Dunbar Castle on the rugged coast of East Lothian, Scotland. Painted by recorded landscape artist John Moxon, the composition captures the castle''s distinct red volcanic sandstone structures and the prominent brick arch before its collapse in 1993, offering notable topographical interest. The scene is rendered in an atmospheric, overcast palette with turbulent seas crashing against the rocky cliffs.
The artwork remains is housed in its original gilded frame which possibly was the inner frame to a much larger frame. The reverse shows (see image) the authentic period pencil inscription ''Dunbar Castle / J. Moxon'' and it is secured behind its original wood backing boards. The watercolour displays minor, uniform age-toning consistent with its date, but the pigments remain well-sheltered under the original glass. An honest, un-restored work of art preserved in its original condition. The frame shows minor ...losses.
About the artist:
John Moxon was a listed British landscape and marine painter active during the late Victorian era. Specialising primarily in watercolour and bodycolour, Moxon was known for his atmospheric, plein-air interpretations of the British coastline, with a particular affinity for the dramatic topography of Scotland and northern England. Moxon’s work belongs to the late 19th-century British regional landscape tradition, heavily influenced by the Romantic movement''s fascination with historic ruins and the untamed power of the sea. His paintings are characterized by their moody palettes, careful architectural detailing, and dynamic depictions of moving water.
