Bronze Sighthound by Pierre Jules Mene

19th century
Description

I have entitled this as a sighthound, as I think he looks more like a Borzoi than a grey hound or deerhound …. !

But the sculptors interpretation is clearly one of a recumbent and extremely elegant dog/hound.

Clearly signed

Pierre Mene 1810-1879

The bronze is attached to a shaped marble platform.

And a rather special detail shows one of the dog’s paws actually extending beyond the bronze base.

This has a wonderful patina and the hound has clearly been a much loved piece of art, as his head has a mellow colour which can only be a result of frequent contact… so he must have had frequent pats to his head.

Overall dimensions

16.5 x9x5

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Animalier movement originated in 19th-century France, characterized by artists who specialized in precise, realistic depictions of animals. Sculptors such as Pierre-Jules Mene and Antoine-Louis Barye gained prominence by capturing anatomically accurate poses and natural behaviours in cast bronze.

These sculptures were typically created using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand casting process. Once cast, artisans hand-chased the metal to add fine surface texture before applying a chemical patina and mounting the bronze onto a marble or timber base.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit crisp detail in the chasing, naturalistic wear to the original patina, and significant physical weight. Look for inscribed artist signatures, foundry stamps, and original mounting hardware beneath the base.

Place the sculpture on a mantelpiece, executive desk, or within a curated bookcase alongside leather-bound volumes. The dark tones and classic form provide a grounding contrast on light wooden surfaces or stone fireplace surrounds.

Dust the sculpture regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush. To preserve the original patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or water exposure.
