A Fine English Silk Needlework Depicting Epsom Park Horse Racing Track.

1900 - 1920
Description

This superb very fine quality English silk needlework picture depicts a panoramic view of Epsom Park during a major horse racing event with hundreds of people in attendance. Some gather to watch the track event. Others are busy around the numerous side shows and refreshment stalls. There is also a heavy police presence in the foreground to combat any social misbehaviour.

This fabulous silk work of art dates to around 1900. The late Victorian, early Edwardian period.

The work within this silk picture is like a fine painting in its detail, with thousands of individual stitches creating this epic scene.

This is the best example of its type that I have ever seen and must have taken years to produce with its meticulous detail.

The condition is very good, and the silks have retained good colour with very little fading.

The picture is presented in its original late 19th century decorative wood and gesso frame, which is in good condition with some minor repairs and refinishing.

English circa 1900

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique silk needlework picture is a decorative textile artwork created by stitching silk threads onto a woven ground, such as silk satin, linen, or canvas. Popular from the late eighteenth century through the Victorian era, these pictures frequently depicted landscape views, historical events, biblical scenes, or equestrian pursuits.

Nineteenth-century needlework pictures were crafted using fine silk or wool yarns stitched onto silk or linen grounds. In many instances, fine painted details were applied directly to the fabric ground for delicate features like faces and skies, and the finished work was typically mounted behind glass in a moulded giltwood frame.

Authentic antique silk embroideries display characteristic age-related features, such as slight fading, subtle toning of the silk ground, and hand-stitched irregularities. Examining the reverse side often reveals hand-tied knots and original mounting methods using wooden stretchers or backing boards.

Framed silk needleworks add texture and historical character when hung above a sideboard, layered within a gallery wall, or displayed in a study or hallway. Pairing traditional textile art with clean-lined furniture creates a refined contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Silk textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight and high-intensity artificial light to prevent fading and fibre degradation. Mount the work behind UV-filtering glass with acid-free materials, maintaining a stable indoor humidity and temperature level.
