For Sale by Tinker & Toad
Description

An original Italian oil painting: Portrait of an Elegant Seated Woman by Attilio Toro (1892–1982), housed in a suitable gilt frame.

Attilio Toro (1892–1982) was an Italian painter whose career bridged traditional academic art and emerging modern influences of the 20th century. He is considered one of the leading exponents of twentieth-century Neapolitan painting. Toro initially trained in his father’s atelier, where he developed a strong foundation in classical drawing and composition that remained central to his work throughout his life.

His work was inspired by nineteenth-century painting, while developing a distinct stylistic language characterized by dense brushwork and luminous tones. His preferred subjects included portraits in the style of Antonio Mancini, marked by a strong sense of sensitivity and expression.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he was a favoured student of the painting professor Vincenzo Volpe. After graduating, his talent recognised and highly regarded by Carlo Siviero, director of the Neapolitan Academy—earned him an appointment as an assistant in the painting department. In 1940, he received an award from the Columbus Association for his work.

In 1961, his painting San Gregorio d'Alife, exhibited at the National Exhibition in Caserta, was awarded a gold medal.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This movement blends classical figurative traditions with impressionistic brushwork and modern lighting techniques. Artists often focused on expressive human portraits and intimate interior scenes using rich, atmospheric tones.

These paintings typically feature oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen, cotton canvas, or wooden panels. Frames were frequently crafted from carved timber finished with gold leaf or plaster gilding.

Authentication involves examining artist signatures, assessing natural age craquelure across the paint surface, and verifying authentic canvas stretchers or wooden backing boards.

Position the piece above a sideboard or console table to create an engaging focal point. Pairing classic oil art with contemporary furniture provides a curated, sophisticated contrast.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust the surface and frame very gently using a clean, soft dry brush.
