Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, European portrait artists increasingly focused on character studies and realistic depictions of everyday subjects. Movements shifted from formal academic portraiture to expressive brushwork and direct observation of light and shadow.

Artworks from this era were primarily executed using oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were traditionally crafted from timber, featuring moulded plaster detailing, gilding, or polished wood finishes.

Authentic works display natural age-related craquelure across the paint layer, visible artist signatures, and characteristic oxidisation on the timber stretcher bars and reverse of the canvas. Construction techniques on the framing and stretcher joints also indicate period origin.

A traditional oil portrait can be hung on a dark feature wall to highlight its rich tones or rested on a sideboard alongside contemporary ceramics to create a curated contrast.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight, damp areas, and heat sources. Clean gently using a dry, soft brush to remove surface dust without disturbing the paint surface.
