A line engraving is a printmaking technique where an image is incised directly into a metal plate, usually copper, using a hardened steel tool called a burin.

Traditional engravings were produced using copper or steel plates, hand-pulled ink, and high-rag content laid paper manufactured from cotton or linen fibres.

Authentic early prints typically exhibit plate marks, distinct paper ageing, chain lines in the paper, and ink that sits slightly raised on the surface rather than flat digital or modern offset dots.

Historical portraits add depth and narrative to contemporary spaces when paired with clean-walled backdrops, minimalist frames, or contrasted against modern minimalist furniture.

Antique paper should be framed using acid-free archival mats, kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and maintained in a stable environment with controlled humidity.
